Driving on a track for sustainable driving

Heading out on a four-wheel drive adventure with friends and family is a great way to get off the beaten track and enjoy the outdoors — but proper preparation is essential to ensure the trip is safe, enjoyable, and environmentally responsible.

Track & Terrain Etiquette

  • Stick to Designated Routes: Only drive on formed roads and tracks that are open to the public.
  • Respect Track Conditions: Avoid tracks that are excessively wet or have been recently graded, as they are more vulnerable to damage.
  • Tread Lightly: Reduce tyre pressure to improve traction, reduce the risk of punctures, and minimize environmental impact.
  • Avoid Wheel Spin: Drive smoothly to prevent churning up the track surface and causing long-term damage.
  • Clear, Don’t Bypass: Remove fallen trees or debris from the track — never drive around obstacles or create new paths.

Water Crossings & Recovery

  • Cross Safely: Only drive through rivers or streams at designated crossings. Always check the water depth and current before proceeding, and drive through slowly and steadily.
  • Winch Responsibly: If recovery is needed, use a tree protector to avoid damaging vegetation.
  • Use Chains Sparingly: Fit wheel chains only as a last resort and with proper understanding of how to use them safely.
