At our October general meeting, we had Paul Tsiaras from Statewide 4×4 give a presentation on GVM upgrades. Paul has been in the business of car lifts and GVM upgrades for around 30 years. He gave a very interesting talk that covered generally what needs to be considered when doing a GVM upgrade. There was an interesting discussion about engaging the car manufacturer for specific makes. One particular vehicle company was quite reluctant to provide information, until it was pointed out that allowing a third party to upgrade its vehicles would lead to more sales.

Paul also discussed towing weights and the GCM (combined vehicle and trailer/caravan weight). It was pointed out that while your vehicle and caravan may be underweight, the combined weight may be over. Many of the utes on the market can only tow their maximum rated weight if there is very limited weight in the tow vehicle – such as only the driver.
