Castlemaine diggings

Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park is a fascinating and historically rich area located near Castlemaine, in central Victoria, about 120 km northwest of Melbourne. Covering around 7,500 hectares, it protects one of the most significant gold rush landscapes in Australia and is part of the Central Victorian Goldfields World Heritage nomination.

The park is filled with historic gold mining sites, including water races, mine shafts, stone chimneys, and remnants of mining villages dating back to the 1850s. Walking or driving through the area gives you a real sense of what life was like during the gold rush era, as much of the landscape still bears the marks of old diggings and sluice workings.

Beyond its history, the park also offers great bushwalking, mountain biking, picnicking, and camping. Popular spots include The Monk, Fryerstown, Vaughan Springs, and Campbells Creek, where you can enjoy scenic tracks surrounded by box–ironbark forest and native wildlife like kangaroos, wallabies, and kookaburras.

Camping is available at sites such as Vaughan Springs Reserve and Warburtons Bridge, with basic facilities like toilets and picnic tables. Visitors are encouraged to respect the area’s heritage by sticking to marked trails and leaving sites undisturbed.

Four-wheel driving in Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park offers a mix of history, scenery, and mild adventure. While the park isn’t known for extreme off-roading like some of Victoria’s high-country areas, it does have a network of bush tracks, gravel roads, and historical routes that are ideal for exploration and touring-style 4WD trips.

The tracks wind through old gold-mining areas, eucalypt forests, and creek crossings, taking you past relics such as abandoned mine shafts, water races, and diggings that date back to the 1850s gold rush. Many of the roads are unsealed, becoming slippery or rutted after rain, which adds some fun for drivers while still being suitable for well-prepared vehicles with moderate clearance.

The park is great for family or club trips, offering picnic and camping spots like Vaughan Springs Reserve or Warburtons Bridge for overnight stays. Always check track conditions and closures with Parks Victoria, as some roads may be seasonally restricted.

It also provides a relaxed four-wheel driving experience — more about exploration and history than hard-core technical tracks — making it perfect for a scenic weekend getaway in central Victoria.
